What is the ICON MaxG IPL Photofacial?
The MaxG IPL is part of the state-of-the-art Palomar ICON® laser system. This handpiece is specially designed to deliver comprehensive IPL photo facials to patients interested in improving the appearance of:
How Does it Work?
During an IPL photofacial, beams of low-energy light are aimed at the patient's desired treatment area. This light passes through the uppermost layers of the skin. It is absorbed by concentrated regions of hemoglobin and melanin, two skin components responsible for developing visible blood vessels, pigmented lesions, and other concerns. As these structures absorb this low-energy light, they break up and dissipate, improving the appearance of the imperfections they cause.
This light also triggers the body's natural healing process, increasing blood flow to the face and creating collagen, a structural protein within the skin. Over time, this improves the skin's overall tightness, tone, and texture.
What Can I Expect from Treatment?
While IPL photo facials can be somewhat uncomfortable, patients generally tolerate them well. They often compare the treatment to the sensation of warm pinpricks or a rubber band snapping against the skin.
Following treatment, patients typically experience no significant downtime. We recommend that patients undergo three to five treatments, each spaced four weeks apart, for optimal results.
Ideal Candidates
An ideal candidate for an IPL photofacial is someone who:
- Has a fair to medium skin tone: IPL is not always safe for darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation.
- Has mild to moderate skin concerns: The treatment benefits those with discoloration, redness, or texture issues.
- Have good skin health: They should be free from active infections, severe acne, or open wounds.
- Live a healthy lifestyle: Clients should be non-smokers and maintain a healthy skincare routine.
Some people should avoid IPL photofacials, including:
- People with darker skin tones, including Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI
- Anyone with active skin infections, wounds, or inflammatory conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
- Pregnant individuals (limited research exists on IPL's safety during pregnancy).
- Those using photosensitizing medications (Accutane, certain antibiotics, etc.).
- People with a history of keloid scarring or light sensitivity.
FAQs
How Long Does an IPL Photofacial Session Take?
An IPL photofacial session usually takes 20 to 45 minutes.
The duration depends on the size of the treatment area. Smaller areas, such as the face, take about 20 to 30 minutes. Larger areas, like the neck and chest, may take longer.
IPL is a noninvasive procedure with no significant downtime. Because of this, you can often schedule it during a lunch break or another convenient time in your day.
What Should I Expect Immediately After an IPL Photofacial?
If you had pigmentation concerns treated, keep in mind that dark spots may appear darker before flaking off over the next 7 to 10 days. Some people also experience slight sensitivity, but this usually resolves quickly.
What Should I Do Before My IPL Photofacial To Prepare?
As you prepare for your IPL photofacial, follow these guidelines:
- Stay Out of the Sun: Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for 2-4 weeks. Sunburned or tanned skin is more prone to complications.
- Discontinue Certain Skincare Products: To prevent irritation, stop using retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other exfoliating products for about one week.
- Refrain from Waxing or Plucking: Avoid hair removal methods like waxing, plucking, or threading in the treatment area for at least one to two weeks. Shaving is usually fine.
- Skip Self-Tanners and Spray Tans: Self-tanning lotions can interfere with IPL results, so avoid them for at least two weeks.
- Check Your Medications: Some medications can increase sensitivity to light. Inform your provider about any medications you are taking.
