Acne Scars & Stretch Marks Q & A

How are acne scars treated?

Moderate to severe forms of acne can damage your skin. A dimpled, pock-marked complexion may remain even after the active acne is resolved. Fortunately, Dr. Riehm and the team at Skin Deep Laser MD offer solutions to minimize and even eliminate the appearance of acne scars.

Chemical peels remove old skin cells and encourage the regeneration of collagen, a skin-strengthening compound, to fill in mild scarring and pockmarks. Our PicoSure Focus® 755nm or ICON® 1540nm lasers are normally our preferred treatment options to achieve the best results. The laser breaks down existing scar tissue and triggers the production of new skin to replace it. The heat energy also stimulates the creation of more collagen to fill in scar depressions and even out any discoloration caused by the scars.

These treatments help resolve acne scars to enhance your self-esteem, improve your appearance, and boost skin health. People of all skin types benefit.

Why do I have stretch marks?

Stretch marks occur when your middle layers of skin tear. The purplish-reddish striations that fade to a silvery-white with time are usually caused by rapid growth that can occur:

  • During pregnancy
  • As a result of adolescent growth
  • Due to certain medications
  • Because of rapid muscle growth or weight gain

Stretch marks can appear on the abdomen, arms, thighs, lower back, breasts, and buttocks. Regardless of why they developed or where they are, stretch marks can make you feel self-conscious and less-than-beautiful.

How are stretch marks treated?

While over-the-counter creams and massages promise to eradicate stretch marks, these strategies are rarely successful. PicoSure Focus 755nm or ICON® 1540nm laser treatments, however, deliver heat energy to break down the stretch marks and restore healthier, smoother-appearing tissue. Energy promotes elastin and collagen growth to encourage the growth of healthy tissue.

The appearance of stretch marks is diminished in just a few sessions lasting about 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Laser treatments only affect the stretch marks and don’t cause any harm to the surrounding skin.

You can go back to regular daily activities following these laser sessions. Any redness or swelling in treatment areas fades within a few days.
